Lasseys beds direct FAQ’s
What is a Sprung Edge base?
A Sprung Edge base will soften the feel of a very firm mattress and has the same number of springs as Bonnel mattress unit of the same size. The springs of a sprung edge base are on top of the base which is like having two mattresses next to each other. This makes the sleep system quite soft at the edges and one should not sit on the edge of a spring edge base if it can be avoided.
What is a Platform Top Base?
Platform bases contain no springs and the mattress is resting on a solid platform which makes a very firm sleep system. The extent of the firmness will depend on the gauge number of the spring mattress. A 12 gauge spring unit will feel a great deal firmer than a 13 gauge spring unit.
What is Memory Foam?
Memory foam was originally developed for the American space industry to provide increased comfort and pressure relief to astronauts. This is a remarkable new material which shapes to fit, eases pressure on the body and delivers support and comfort. When exposed to the heat and weight of the body, the foam reacts by softening up and shaping itself to the outline of the body, offering optimum support and pressure relief. The body sinks into the foam until the weight is distributed evenly to the entire supporting surface.
What is a pocket sprung Mattress?
A pocket sprung mattress has lots of individual springs standing upright, and each spring is within a fabric pocket. Each spring on it's own isn't actually very firm, but because there are so many they give you excellent support due to the fact that they contour to your body.
How many pocket springs are there in my mattress?
The industry standard for pocket sprung mattresses is as follows: A King Size (5' x 6'6") 1500 pocket sprung mattress has 1500 (actually about 1512) pocket springs. Any other size mattress has the same number of springs per square foot, but has either more or less springs depending on the size. This same system applies to 1000 pocket sprung mattresses.
What is an open coil sprung mattress?
Open coil means that there are usually only around 360 springs (for a double mattress). Each of the springs is linked together within a wire frame. Open coil springs are the traditional type of springs used in mattresses. The disadvantage with open coil springs is that they create a sprung platform instead of contouring to your body like the pocket springs do.
